Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Overview,

Grade C
Annapurna Devathali is truly a hidden sanctuary 36 km. north of Pokhara. This deep valley at the head of Modi river was first explored by a westerner only in 1956. Except the gorge gap above Hinku, it is an ampitheatre entirely enclosed by snow ranges. The prominent peaks that guard it are (clockwise): Annapurna south (7,071 m), Varah Sikhar (7,647 m), Annapurna -I (8091 m) Khangsar Chyuli (7,485 m), Tarke Kang (7,193 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m) and Machhapuchre (6,983 m). The place is sacred to the Gurung shepherds who graze their animals here during summer.

The trek to this place involves about 10 days starting from Pokhara. One can drive to the bridge over Modi Khola near Birethanti about 2 hours from Pokhara, and then climb gradually to the Gurung village of Gandrung. The village of Chhomrong is 4 hour walk to the north. Beyond Chhomrong there are pleasant stopping places at Kuldighar, Dobhan and Hinku in clearings of dense forests rich in wildlife. Within the Sanctuary, one can camp on alpine glades close to glaciers. The return trek is more interesting along the east side of Modi Khola, passing the Gurung village of Landrung, Potana and Dhampus. The last lap of the trek includes a steep descent to Suikhet.
